Schenker Launches Cross-Canada Food Drive
Supply Chain and Logistics Services Provider to Work with Customers and Suppliers to Help Fill Food Bank Collection Bins Across Canada
News Item Entered: Tuesday, May 27, 2008
(Toronto, Ontario, May 28, 2008) Schenker of Canada Ltd. is embarking on the largest ever Cross-Canada Food Drive Campaign in the company’s history. Working with food banks across the country, the company is launching this “Nationwide Food Drive” on June 16 and will be collecting food donations until July 4.
Schenker of Canada Ltd., one of the leading logistics service providers to the food industry, will be placing food collection bins in each of its 40 offices across Canada. The company is urging its customers and suppliers to do the same. At the end of the Food Drive, representatives of Schenker of Canada Ltd. will collect the food bins for distribution to local food banks.
“The number of hungry Canadians is at an unacceptable level with more than 720,000 Canadians relying on food banks each month,” says Katharine Schmidt, Executive Director of the Canadian Association of Food Banks (CAFB). “We are very appreciative of the support Schenker has given to the food bank community in Canada.”
”We are proud to have a strong partnership with Schenker and to support them in their commitment to fight hunger,” says Gail Nyberg, Executive Director of Daily Bread Food Bank. ”The fact that this nationwide drive will benefit local food banks across the country, like ours, is as necessary as it is exciting.”
According to HungerCount 2007, food banks assist Canadians in every province and territory including growing cities, small towns, and rural and northern communities. Fifty-one per cent of households receiving food assistance are families with at least one child. Between 1997 and 2007, the number of people using food banks increased by 8.4%.
“2008 marks the 50th anniversary of Schenker doing business in Canada. Since inception, our organization has become an integral part of various communities across Canada, and in honour of this corporate milestone, we feel this is just one of the ways we can give back,” adds Claude Germain, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, Schenker of Canada Ltd. “By embarking on this ambitious initiative, we will have an opportunity to support the hundreds of thousands of Canadians in communities all across this country who rely on food banks for their very existence. Canada is a great nation with a wealth of resources. No one should go hungry.”
