Manchester 2002 Commonwealth Games appoints Schenker as Provider of Freight Forwarding
Schenker's UK subsidiary Schenker Limited has been appointed as the Official Provider of Freight Forwarding services to the Manchester 2002 Commonwealth Games (M2002). The XVII Commonwealth Games, to be held at Manchester from July 25 - August 4th 2002, are the centrepiece of the Queen's Golden Jubilee celebrations. They will be the largest multi-sport event ever held in the United Kingdom and will involve 72 nations from around the globe.
With 130 years experience of handling freight forwarding for major events, including the recent Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City and the Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia, Schenker is well-placed to meet the challenge of the M2002.
Among the range of services Schenker is providing are: logistics planning and management, international air, road and ocean freight forwarding, Customs clearance and documentation, domestic UK transport and warehousing. Schenker is responsible for all inbound and outbound freight requirements for the games.
"The diverse nature of the sports and its logistical challenges that make-up the Commonwealth Games, mean it's quite a wide-spectrum of services which are required", comments Schenker's UK Managing Director, Hans-J. Schlausch. "We are delighted that the high standards Schenker provided in Sydney and Salt Lake City have given us this unique opportunity to demonstrate our logistics know-how in the UK."
Over 5,000 athletes, team officials and their equipment representing 17 sports including athletics, badminton, lawn bowls, cycling, weightlifting, hockey, netball and rugby 7s will be arriving with their equipment in Manchester for the Opening Ceremony on July 25th 2002.
The Games are expected to have a significant economic impact on the region and strengthen and establish new trade links across the globe. Schenker has its own dedicated office and staff set-up in Manchester to cater for the huge volumes of business which are expected to flow through the 15 venues between now and the end of October 2002. Its 20,000 square foot logistics center is already operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week and provides the focal point for Schenker's Manchester 2002 operation.
"In addition to setting up the on-site requirements at Manchester, we have also established a network of contacts covering all the Commonwealth countries to ensure consistently high standards for athletes and officials wherever they are based," adds Hans-J. Schlausch.
Niels de Vos, Commercial Director for Manchester 2002 says: "It is reassuring to have one of the world's leading freight forwarding companies working with us to ensure all the necessary equipment required by athletes is transported in an efficient and cost effective way. Schenker will play a vital part in the success of the Games."
